My Turtle Hatchling Release Experience in Bataan
I joined a turtle hatchling release at the Pag-asa Pawikan Protection and Conservation Center in Bataan through iVolunteer Philippines.

The release was done close to sunset. The turtles find the sea by moving toward the brightest natural horizon, which is usually the open sky above the water. Artificial lights and camera flashes can confuse them and send them in the wrong direction. Releasing them near sunset also means less heat and fewer daytime predators, although the conservation team should still decide the exact timing.
We watched the hatchlings move across the sand toward the sea. Some were quick, while others took longer to find their way. Naturally, I thought the ones that reached the water first had the best chance of surviving.
But the facilitator told us that this is not always the case. Predators may already be waiting in the water, so being first does not guarantee survival. Sometimes, the hatchlings that enter later are the ones that make it.

Reaching the Sea Is Only the Beginning
The short distance from the nest to the water is just the first part of a much harder journey. In the sea, turtles still face predators, plastic waste, fishing lines and nets, coastal development, and changing ocean conditions.
A supervised release can give hatchlings a safer start, but it cannot remove every danger. It is commonly estimated that only around one in every 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings survives to adulthood. The actual rate is difficult to measure and can vary by species and location, but it shows why protecting them at every stage matters.

Why Pawikan Matter
Green turtles feed on seagrass and help keep seagrass beds healthy. These areas provide food and shelter for other marine life, help stabilize the sea floor, and support water quality.
Sea turtles also bring nutrients from the ocean to the beach. Unhatched eggs, eggshells, and hatchlings that do not survive become nutrients in the sand. These help coastal plants grow, and the plants help hold the sand in place and reduce erosion.
Other species have different roles. Hawksbill turtles, for example, feed on sponges and help maintain the balance of coral-reef communities. A decline in sea turtles can therefore affect the habitats and other animals connected to them.
How We Can Help
Protecting pawikan does not end once the hatchlings reach the water. Here are a few ways we can help:
- Join responsible volunteer activities. Check organizations such as iVolunteer Philippines and follow the instructions of their conservation partners.
- Cut down on single-use plastic and dispose of waste properly. Trash from inland communities can eventually reach rivers and the sea.
- Join beach and coastal cleanups. These activities remove waste that may be eaten by or entangle marine animals.
- Do not disturb turtles, nests, or eggs. Avoid touching them, crowding them, or using flash unless trained conservation workers tell you otherwise.
- Keep nesting beaches dark and clear. Bright lights, noise, vehicles, and other obstacles can disturb nesting turtles and disorient hatchlings.
- Do not buy turtle products. This includes eggs, meat, shells, jewelry, and souvenirs made from turtle parts.
- Support local conservation groups. You can volunteer, donate when possible, or share verified information about their work.
The release lasted only part of a day for us, but protecting pawikan is continuing work for conservation workers and coastal communities.
Watching the hatchlings reach the sea did not feel like witnessing the end of their struggle. It felt like watching them begin it. We cannot make the journey safe for every turtle, but we can avoid making it harder.
