A Night of a Thousand Lanterns in Chiang Mai

Have you watched the movie Tangled? There was a scene where lanterns were released into the sky. Watching it felt really magical, and I couldn’t believe that something like that actually exists in real life.

Yee Peng is an annual festival celebrated in Northern Thailand, known for the release of thousands of paper lanterns into the night sky. The festival is celebrated around the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls in November. In the weeks leading up to the festival, Chiang Mai is decorated with colorful lights, lanterns, and other decorations.

I arrived at the festival grounds late in the afternoon. The atmosphere was already lively, with traditional Thai music playing and the smell of food in the air. I was excited to finally experience the festival for myself.

As the sun started to set, the crowds gathered around the main stage for the lantern lighting ceremony. The ceremony included chanting and prayer before everyone prepared their paper lanterns for release. We received our own lantern, lit it, and waited until it was ready before letting it go into the night sky.

Seeing thousands of paper lanterns floating above us was mesmerizing. It was one of those moments when you couldn’t help but stop and look up. The lanterns represented hopes and wishes, and seeing so many people release them together made the moment feel even more special.

As the night went on, lanterns continued to float into the sky while the festival grounds remained lit with colorful lights and decorations. The atmosphere was peaceful and joyful, and it was an experience I will never forget.

Attending the Yee Peng Festival was an incredible experience. Seeing the lanterns, being surrounded by the festivities, and watching people from different places come together to celebrate made the night memorable for me. More than anything, I remember looking up at all those lights in the sky and being in awe of how beautiful it was. It remains one of my favorite memories from Chiang Mai.
